1. What inspired Blockade Labs to focus on developing the Skybox AI technology, and how does it revolutionize the graphics industry?

Generative AI is incredibly important, its impact is and will increasingly be felt in virtually every avenue through which humans express themselves creatively. We recognized this disruptive, transformative trend back in 2021 and started building for it at that point.

At first our results were crude and expensive, but by January of 2023 we’d cracked a number of hard problems that empowered our team to do two things better than anybody else. 1 – We could create images of arbitrarily large sizes 2 – We can do it in a fraction of the time it took other companies to create much smaller, less refined imagery.

This combination of breakthroughs opened up our path to Skybox AI, where we took the labor-intensive and time-consuming process of creating a realistic or artistic equirectangular 360 panoramic skybox or scene, and replaced it with a simple text-to-skybox interface.

While it’s true for Skybox AI, it’s not specific to our product: When something is costly and time-consuming, few people use it and they often make-do with something generic or wind up spending a lot on getting exactly what they want.

When that same thing retains its quality but becomes so utterly inexpensive to create and can be rapidly iterated on by the person who needs it, you find that usage of that item explodes, and suddenly dozens or hundreds of entirely new use-cases emerge that just didn’t make sense before, but do now.

Blockade Labs offers a solution to the cost and complexity of high-quality creation, opening up a world of possibilities few could see even as recently as a year ago.

2. Can you explain the process behind generating these 8K 360° seamless customizable worlds in just seconds?

The best I can do is explain that “the AI model” is actually only a small part of the overall “pipeline” that produces our scenes & skyboxes. We regularly reinvent large

portions of our underlying generative pipeline to achieve better quality and performance.

3. How does Skybox AI address the common roadblocks faced by creators and developers in the graphics industry?

It’s a lot of work to create! In traditional workflows a skilled artist might spend several days working on a single scene and at the end of it just have one or a few related versions to show for it. The time-consuming nature of the work, and the difficulty of painting as flat what is actually a 360 panorama means that most of the time must be spent creating the scene rather than exploring what scenes you might want to create given all the time in the world.

With Skybox AI, creators are spared that rough choice. Being able to create a dozen new skyboxes or panoramic scenes in just a few minutes simply by describing an idea or fleeting whim is wildly disruptive. The process is no longer about what’s possible, and it becomes about what’s ideal to each creator to a degree that just isn’t possible without AI.

4. In what ways does this breakthrough open up new possibilities for content creation on the Apple Vision Pro and in professional entertainment?

Apple shipped six high-resolution, immersive environments with the AVP because, especially with the limitations of real-time compositing from the devices’ cameras, spatial computing becomes even more powerful and transformative when it can be performed in a fully virtualized environment. But Apple only shipped 6 such environments, and while they are stunningly beautiful, they are limited.

With Skybox AI, that number goes from “6 created by Apple” to “as many as you could possibly want and anything you could possibly think of”. Our Model 3 begins to show what we’re capable of, producing in seamless, native 8K resolution and with intense, intricate details that will only improve with upcoming versions.

iteration and experimentation front and center in modern creative workflows unlocking time and spending to be deployed elsewhere. If a change is needed, rather than starting the whole process over, an existing environment can be remixed to keep all the geometry and layout while fundamentally reimagining the content itself, ranging from small subtle adjustments to complete do-overs. The platform requires essentially no ‘skill’, although it is important to know what you want when you see it. We’re all born with personal aesthetic preferences (call it ‘taste’,) but few are born with the innate talent to create at a high level. 11. What are the next steps for Blockade Labs in terms of expanding the capabilities of Skybox AI and further empowering creators and developers?

Two words. Immersion and Intelligence. Over the last year, we’ve accomplished our three key goals with the product, which is optimized for accessibility, quality, and control. The next generation will take Skybox AI beyond imagery and let users turn their scenes into immersive experiences. This will start to become apparent in 2024, but 2025 is going to have the bigger impact. At that point the process is text-to-prototype, and the whole world will change.

12. As virtual and augmented reality technologies continue to advance, how do you see Skybox AI evolving to meet the growing demands of the industry?

Skybox AI and other new tools will make it easier for anyone to create games or experiences with less effort and more quality and control. As generation times and costs decrease, we will enter a golden age of creation where turning an idea into reality is so simple that anyone can do it anytime, even just for fun.
